Brigadiers Break Into Top 5 at DCA World Championships

With an emotional and inspired Finals performance, The Brigadiers Drum and Bugle Corps completed the 2007 season at the DCA World Championships in Rochester, New York over the Labor Day weekend, placing 5th in the Finals competition.

In a year filled with its share of challenges, including a significant revision of the visual program shortly after the competitive season had begun, the Brigs spent much of the summer playing "catch up," slowly but surely refining and improving a demanding program with elements rarely seen in the all-age activity. The Brigs refused to succumb to any challenges placed before them, however, and battled into the upper echelons of DCA competition. At Finals, in true Brigadier fashion, the corps rose to the occasion and gave the crowd its most cohesive and exciting performance of the year, regaining a position in the elite top five all-age drum corps.

Brigadiers See Continued Improvement in Central Square

The Brigadiers Drum and Bugle Corps enjoyed a successful outing Saturday night at the first of two home shows scheduled in the Syracuse area for the 2007 DCA season. A smaller than usual crowd - due in large part to the ever-present rain showers that moved into the region earlier in the evening - crowded under the awnings of the Paul V. Moore Stadium in Central Square. Despite the less-than-desirable weather conditions, the crowd was undaunted in its enthusiasm and appreciation for the four competing corps and the Brigs' special guests, the Mighty St. Joe's Alumni Corps, who performed in exhibition and entertained the audience as only St. Joe's can.

The Brigadiers' "Images in Time"

Day 5 of the "Images in Time" series comes to you just a bit early, since computers and sand don't really mix and it's time to head to Wildwood! With that said, it is with great excitement that we now introduce our image for both the present and the future, our show poster for 2007.

The concept of the poster depicting the Brigs from the past through the future, along with some of the memorable images that will grace the field in 2007 was brought to life by the amazingly talented graphic artist Chris Blakely, who is also the artist behind much of the new graphic art associated with the corps. More of Chris' work can be viewed at www.groggie.com. The Brigs thank Chris wholeheartedly for his wonderful contributions to the corps this year.

The Brigadiers' "Images in Time"

Day 4 returns us to the not-so-distant past 2003. The photo featured in this edition of our series shows the corps at the 2003 DCA Finals in a drill formation that became closely associated with the corps during the late '90s and early 2000s the "Brigadier Wedge."

The 2003 Finals are probably best known, however, for a far more somber event - the unfortunate passing of Empire Statesmen founder and Director, Mr. Vince Bruni. The Brigs, in the only way they knew to possibly pay tribute to this legendary drum corps icon and close friend to the corps, performed the corps' ballad, "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," for the members of the Statesmen on the field at retreat. It was a moving moment for all involved, and one all Brigs involved hold deep in their hearts. Mr. Bruni continues to be missed by the drum corps community and by all who knew him.

The Brigadiers' "Images in Time"

On day 3 of our series, our time machine transports us quite a bit forward to the year 1992. After the devastating deaths of two corps members in a car accident in 1968, the Brigs struggled through the next few years, going inactive in 1972. The corps made a valiant effort to qualify for DCA Finals in 1973, enduring an intense five-week rehearsal schedule and entering the field of competition just a few weeks before Finals. Unfortunately, a penalty for undersized flags at prelims left the Brigs short of a spot in the Finals by five hundredths of a point. The corps sadly folded in the wake of its disappointment.

After a long hiatus, a group of former Brigadiers and newly-interested individuals met in late 1990 to attempt to revive the corps. The diligent and dedicated efforts of this group paid off and the Brigadiers were reorganized as a parade corps, hitting the streets in 1991. In 1992, the Brigs returned to the field of competition, accomplishing an eleventh place finish at DCA Finals in the corps' first year back on the field. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Brigadiers' "Images in Time"

Day two of our "Images in Time" retrospective takes us back to 1954. That year saw the merger of three corps - "The Boys From Syracuse," "The Cortland Moose" and "The Sons of American Legion Post #41" to form the Syracuse Brigadiers. The image below is the program cover from the 1954 "Pageant of the Drum" competition held August 14, 1954 at MacArthur Stadium in Syracuse. The Pageant continues today, now known as the "Pageant of Drums." Note that the program references the stadium as the home of the Syracuse Chiefs, a minor league baseball team that is currently the Class AAA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. This year's Pageant will take place August 18 at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse, still sharing its home with the Chiefs. Tickets are available by going to http://www.brigadiers.com/pageant/.

The Brigadiers' "Images in Time"

In anticipation of the first show of the 2007 DCA competitive season, we thought we'd share with you some of The Brigadiers' actual "images in time." Over the next week, we will feature one reflection each day of the Brigs' past, concluding on Friday with a new "image" for 2007, just in time for the premier of our "Images in Time" program! We hope you enjoy these images as much as every Brigadier through the years has enjoyed creating these great memories!

The first in our series comes courtesy of NanciD, a well-known Internet poster, blogger, and drum corps historian, who was kind enough to recently feature the Brigs in her drum corps history blog, Historical Drum Corps Publications.

To see what it takes to make a champion drum and bugle corps, The New Times embedded a reporter and photographer for a 24-hour stint among the roughly 150 people who traveled to Endicott July 25 to 27 for a midseason competition. Watching as the Brigadiers trained their sights on a fifth consecutive national championship, we learned that they sit atop a niche activity that isn't quite sport and isn't quite music or marching band, but is more of a lifestyle. This is a day in the life of a way of life...
